Jared Leto wore special contact lenses to effectively blind himself as he shot new movie Blade Runner 2049.
The 45-year-old actor plays Niander Wallace in the upcoming film, an android manufacturer who happens to be blind. Jared is known for his method style of acting and went to extreme lengths to fully immerse himself into the character.
According to a profile and interview piece on the actor for the Wall Street Journal’s WSJ. Magazine, Jaredwore lenses which made his eyes look opaque while also reducing his visibility, meaning he had to be guided around the set.
But Jared’s method acting was in force even when he underwent his first camera test for the role, with director Denis Villeneuve telling the publication he was astounded by the actor’s passion and determination.
“He could not see at all. He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple,” Denis recalled. “Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful – I was moved to tears.”
Once he landed the role, Jared continued to transform himself into Niander, with Denis admitting that while he was aware of the actor’s reputation, he was unprepared for the lengths he would go to.
“We all heard stories about Jared, how he transforms into the characters. But even this didn’t prepare me for what was to come,” he said, describing some of Jared’s acting decisions as “insane”.
“(But) he really created something. Every time Jared came on set, it was a boost of energy, tension, and excitement.”
However, Jared told the magazine of his characterization for the film: “I didn’t dive as deep down the rabbit hole as maybe I’ve done before”. He added that while he tried to live as a blind person, he was never under the impression that he was actually blind, laughing: “I’m crazy, but I’m not insane.”
